There are many reasons to consider buying flashlights for kids. Some kids are fascinated by lights and can be kept occupied and amused with a simple flashlight. Other kids are afraid of the dark so a bright flashlight might provide comfort and a feeling of safety when nearby on a nightstand or used in place of an LED nightlight. Or maybe you plan on bringing the little ones camping and a flashlight would be a necessity. While you would not buy a child a flashlight for this specific purpose, most of us have fond memories of reading under the covers with a flashlight well past our bedtime. Whatever your reason, there are many different types of flashlights made especially for children.
Features of Childrens Flashlights
Flashlights for kids come in all shapes and sizes, but most do share some common characteristics. First of all, any children's flashlight has to be durable and luckily most manufacturers understand this. A kids flashlight is usually made of rugged plastic and will stand up to drops and some minor mistreatment. Secondly, flashlights for children need to be easy to operate. As adults, we generally do not think of flashlights as being overly complicated, but for kids flashlights may be too heavy or too big for young hands and buttons may be difficult to manipulate. Most kids flashlights are lightweight, sized appropriately for the hands of a child with big buttons that are easy to use. Often, kids flashlights will include other features that make them more entertaining such as sounds, images of their favorite cartoon or movie characters, and a glow in the dark flashlight is even more fascinating for children.
Kids Flashlight Makes and Models
Because flashlights for kids are a bit of a specialty item, they are mostly produced by companies that are well known for making toys and other products especially for children. While you will not find a Maglite made especially for kids, Maglite and other companies do make mini flashlight which might be suitable for kids, but they are generally more expensive than your typical kid flashlight. You are more likely to find a childrens flashlight in a toy or kids store than in a hardware store. A Fisher Price flashlight is sure to be a hit and Playskool makes a number of different flashlights for children as well with many styles from which to choose. Coleman, the company best known for making camping and other outdoor products, also makes a few kids lanterns and flashlights specifically for kids. A Coleman kids flashlight is quite suitable for camping trips and other outdoor activities where a rugged flashlight would be more appropriate. Attach a Coleman to a belt clip and your son or daughter will be ready for outdoor adventures.
Buying a Kids Flashlight
So how much will a kids flashlight set you back? With very little effort, you can find flashlights for kids under ten dollars. Many sell for between ten and fifteen dollars. If for some reason you insist on spending more or you do not care about price, you can probably find a model or two that sell for around twenty dollars. If you are buying a flashlight for your child because they are scared of the dark or because they find flashlights fascinating, just about any flashlight they can work themselves will do. If you are planning on taking your kids camping and need something a bit more durable, it may make sense to spend a little more.
The Kid Flashlight
Kids flashlights are here to stay and are not the type of fad toy or product that is likely to disappear from the market after the latest trend dies down and fades away. Kids will continue to be fascinated by lights, be scared of the dark or enjoy family camping trips. While it is certainly true that they will eventually outgrow or become bored with a childrens flashlight, your son or daughter should get many hours of enjoyment, comfort or practical use out of one for a very reasonable and low price.
